The Artist: Richard Biffle

Richard Biffle, born in 1964 in coastal southeastern Virginia and North Carolina, is a renowned painter and illustrator with a long-standing connection to the Grateful Dead and its iconic imagery. His artistic journey began unconventionally; he didn't make a conscious decision to start creating art, as it was always a natural part of his life. In the early 1990s, Biffle started selling his fantasy art as door posters in Grateful Dead concert parking lots to fund his travels from show to show. His work eventually caught the attention of the band's merchandise team, who approached him to create art for the Grateful Dead.

Biffle's art, particularly his skeleton portrait paintings, is heavily influenced by the Grateful Dead. He finds a sense of family and inspiration in their music and the broader Deadhead community. His skeleton portraits are designed to be open to interpretation, allowing viewers to see in them whoever they choose, be it themselves, a loved one, or even members of the Grateful Dead. This approach reflects the timeless and universal appeal of the band's songs and lyrics.

His work schedule is intense, typically spending seven days a week, ten hours a day in his studio. To maintain creativity and avoid burnout, Biffle listens to a diverse range of music while working, from jazz artists like Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Charlie Parker, to a mix of classic rock, blues, funk, folk, and bluegrass, including artists like Jethro Tull, Rush, The Beatles, Grisman/Garcia, and Jimbo Mathus & The Squirrel Nut Zippers.
