The Band: Pearl Jam

Emerging from the vibrant grunge scene of Seattle in the early 1990s, Pearl Jam has cemented their place as one of the most influential and enduring rock bands of all time. Their music, a potent blend of hard rock, punk energy, and poetic lyricism, has resonated with generations of fans, capturing the angst, frustration, and yearning of a generation.

Pearl Jam's meteoric rise began with their 1991 debut album, "Ten," which catapulted them into mainstream stardom. The album's raw energy, heartfelt lyrics, and undeniable musicality struck a chord with audiences worldwide, selling over 10 million copies and establishing Pearl Jam as a force to be reckoned with.

Throughout the 1990s, Pearl Jam continued to release critically acclaimed albums, including "Vs." (1993), "Vitalogy" (1994), and "No Code" (1996), further solidifying their position as grunge royalty. Their music evolved over the years, incorporating elements of alternative rock, psychedelia, and even classical music, but they never lost their signature blend of raw power and emotional depth.

The Concert:

Pearl Jam, as part of their 2022 European Tour, delivered a memorable headlining performance at Lollapalooza Paris. The band's setlist was notable for its variety and included the tour debuts of “Satan’s Bed” and “Go.” The performance kicked off with “Why Go” and “Mind Your Manners,” followed by a rendition of Pink Floyd’s “Interstellar Overdrive” leading into “Corduroy.” They also played “Daughter,” and for the first time since July 2018, they performed “Satan’s Bed” from their 'Vitalogy' album.

Their set continued with a mix of classics and newer tracks, featuring “Even Flow” from their debut album 'Ten,' as well as “Dance Of The Clairvoyants” and “Who Ever Said” from their latest album 'Gigaton.' The band also included a special tag of The Rolling Stones’ “Waiting On A Friend” during their performance of “Wishlist.”

The latter half of their main set spanned their discography, with songs from 'Vitalogy,' 'Yield,' 'Backspacer,' and more, including hits like “Jeremy,” “Black,” and “Porch.” The set concluded with “Go” from the 'Vs.' album, a track last played in 2018, followed by an encore featuring the classic “Alive” and a cover of The Who’s “Baba O’Riley”.

Information about the overall event, Lollapalooza Paris 2022, such as other performing artists, audience size, and general event reviews, was not readily available from the sources explored. However, Pearl Jam's performance stood out as a significant highlight of the festival.

The Venue: The Hippodrome

The Hippodrome Paris Longchamp, the prestigious venue that hosted Lollapalooza Paris 2022, is steeped in a rich history that adds a unique dimension to the events it hosts. This iconic racecourse, located in the Bois de Boulogne in the 16th arrondissement of Paris, spans 57 hectares and is renowned for its challenging interlaced tracks and a notable hill that tests the mettle of competing thoroughbreds. It boasts several racetracks, varying from 1,000 to 4,000 meters in length, and can accommodate up to 50,000 spectators.

The Longchamp Racecourse's history dates back to April 27, 1857, when it opened in front of a massive crowd, including Emperor Napoleon III and his wife Eugénie. This event marked the beginning of what would become one of the world's most famous racecourses, home to more than half of France's Group 1 races, including the highly acclaimed Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

The idea for this venue was born out of the desire for a more grandiose setting than the existing Champ de Mars. The Duc de Morny proposed building a racecourse within the expansive Bois de Boulogne, and the Longchamp opened the following year. Its scenic location, straddling the banks of the Seine, makes it a perfect setting for elite racing events.

The racecourse has witnessed numerous historical events, such as the establishment of the Grand Prix de Paris in 1863, which instantly became the world's richest horse race. Despite setbacks, like being bombed during the 1870 Siege of Paris, Longchamp has consistently emerged stronger, reinforcing its significance in the global racing scene.

In the latter half of the 20th century, the Hippodrome de Longchamp expanded its offerings beyond horse racing, hosting concerts and other significant events. Notably, the Rolling Stones performed here during their Voodoo Lounge Tour in 1995 and returned for another performance in 2022. In recent years, the racecourse underwent a major renovation, commissioned by France Galop and designed by the renowned architect Dominique Perrault. It reopened in 2018, featuring a modern grandstand, an open-air café, and a rooftop lounge, enhancing the experience for guests and maintaining its status as a premier event venue.

Today, Longchamp is more than just a racecourse; it's a cultural landmark that seamlessly blends sporting history with modern entertainment. Its capacity to host a diverse range of events, from prestigious horse races to world-class music festivals like Lollapalooza, highlights its versatility and enduring appeal. The combination of its historical legacy and contemporary relevance makes it a unique and sought-after location for events of all kinds
